The Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College (MAFDC) undertook a study visit to Davao City from 3-5 April 2012, respectively to expose the course participants under the module ‘Strategic Studies and International Relations’ to the bilateral and multilateral cooperation among BIMP-EAGA member states through economy, politics, social and security. The delegation was led by First Admiral Dato’ Pahlawan Syed Zahiruddin Putra bin Syed Othman, Commandant of the College with 8 staffs and 39 course participants of the rank Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel. Aside from Malaysia, the course participants were from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Several members of the delegation were accompanied by their spouses.
In the morning of 4 April, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Eastern Mindanao Command Deputy Commander, Commodore Romeo Santiago Nebres, PN (GSC). During the call, both sides discussed issues on peace and security in southern Philippines and other issues of mutual concern. Thereafter, they proceeded to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) where Assistant Secretary Ms. Corazon Ginete, briefed them about Mindanao and BIMP-EAGA development followed by question-and-answer session. In the afternoon, the delegation visited the Consulate General wherein they were given a short briefing followed by discussion on the history and roles and functions of the Consulate General. A welcome lunch was also prepared for the delegation. Subsequently, the delegation visited RDL Pharmaceutical Laboratories to familiarize themselves with the wide variety of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products of the company.
In summary, the visit has been successful as it enabled the course participants to appreciate and familiarize themselves with the bilateral and multilateral cooperation among BIMP-EAGA member states. After Davao City, the delegation was off to Pontianak, Indonesia for their next visit.
