THE WORKING VISIT OF THE HON. TAN SRI NOR MOHAMED BIN YAKCOP, MINISTER AT THE PRIME MINISTER’S DEPARTMENT, MALAYSIA TO CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, PHILIPPINES FROM 20-21 OCTOBER 2011
The Hon. Tan Sri Nor Mohamed bin Yakcop, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia led the Malaysian delegation to the BIMP-EAGA Ministerial Meeting hosted by the Philippines in Cagayan de Oro City from 20 to 21 October 2011. The BIMP-EAGA 20th Senior Official Meeting (SOM) and 16th Ministerial Meeting (MM) are a scheduled gathering of the sub-regional grouping since its formation in March 1994. The meeting is aimed at following through the past decisions in achieving BIMP-EAGA’s twin strategic vision, i.e. the `food basket’ and `premier ecotourism’ destination for ASEAN and the rest of Asia. Notwithstanding this, central to achieving these goals is the issue of connectivity via land, sea and air amongst member states.
2. Consul General Mohammad Azhar Mazlan, together with officials of host government, was on hand to receive the Hon. Minister’s arrival at Cagayan de Oro airport as well as three other State Ministers namely the Hon. Datuk Abang Amar Hj Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abg Hj Openg, Minister of Housing and City Development of Sarawak, the Hon. Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, Minister of Industrial Development Sabah and the Hon. Kol. Datuk Yussof B. Hj Mahal, Chairman Labuan Corporation. In the afternoon, the Hon. Minister chaired the Ministers Retreat followed by attending a Fellowship Night in the evening with the theme “Pista sa Nayon” (Town Fiesta) hosted by the Hon. Vicente Emano, Mayor of Cagayan de Oro.
3. The Hon. Minister delivered his welcoming remarks at the Opening Session of the Ministerial Meeting on 21 October after which Malaysia handed over the chairmanship of BIMP-EAGA to the Philippines represented by Sec. Luwalhati R. Antonino, Chairperson of Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA). The BIMP-EAGA Ministers unanimously adopted the Report of the 20th SOM as well as issued a Joint Statement. The meeting has been successful in renewing the aspirations of BIMP-EAGA leaders in achieving the three core objectives i.e. connectivity, food basket and premier ecotourism destination amongst the four member states namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
