STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR GLORIA CORINA TIWET
REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO
THE UNITED NATIONS
ON THE REPORT OF THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC
ENERGY AGENCY (IAEA)
PLENARY MEETING OF THE 74TH SESSION OF
THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
NEW YORK, 11 NOVEMBER 2019
Mr. President,
1. At the outset, my delegation wishes to pay our tribute to the late Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Yuki Amano. We thank him for his tireless efforts, commitment and dedication to the work of the Agency in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy for the benefit of the humankind.

2. Malaysia believes in the balanced and effective implementation of the three pillars of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), namely nuclear disarmament, nuclear nonproliferation, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In this regard, the role of the IAEA is of vital importance in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology. We recognize the Agency as the sole competent authority mandated to verify the compliance of States towards their safeguards obligations.
3. Malaysia welcomes the draft resolution L.10 pertaining to the report of the IAEA for 2018. We recognize significant activities by the Agency as highlighted in the report, in various areas including nuclear technology, nuclear sciences and applications, nuclear safety and security, nuclear verification, and management of technical cooperation for development, among others.
4. The draft resolution reaffirms the importance of support towards the Agency in the role of development and application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. This is in line with Malaysia’s long-standing principled position of continuing support to the Agency.
5. As a member of the IAEA since 1969, Malaysia continues to benefit from its extensive participation in the technical assistance and cooperation program with the IAEA. The cooperation between Malaysia and the IAEA in various fields have been fruitful and encouraging. Malaysia reiterates its commitment towards building further cooperation with the IAEA and interested partners in areas of mutual benefits.

6. Malaysia remains fully committed to supporting and working with the IAEA as well as other IAEA Member States, to advance the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technology. Malaysia hopes that the IAEA will continue to play its important role of facilitating access to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and technology for States while ensuring the highest level of nuclear safety, security and safeguards are adhered to.
7. Once again, Malaysia reaffirms its support to the draft resolution as one of its co-sponsors.
