STATEMENT BY

DEPUTY PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAYSIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS

AT THE COMMEMORATION OF THE

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF VESAK 2025

Mr. Co-Chairs,

Venerable Monks,

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

At the outset, allow me to extend heartfelt greetings and warm wishes of ‘Happy Vesak’ to all who are celebrating this holy day.

I also join previous speakers in expressing our sincere appreciation to His Excellency Mr. Cherdchai Chaivaivid, Permanent Representative of Thailand, and Mr. Chathura Perera, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of Sri Lanka, for co-chairing today’s commemoration. Our thanks also go to all members of the organising committee for their efforts in bringing us together in recognition of this important day.

Today, as we gather with our Buddhist friends to honour the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha, we are reminded of the profound and timeless wisdom he imparted, that transcends religion, geography, and time. Vesak is not only a spiritual observance for Buddhists, but also a universal call to embrace compassion, mindfulness, tolerance, and peace—principles that are increasingly essential in navigating the uncertainties and complexities of our modern world.

4. In Malaysia, a nation blessed with cultural and religious diversity, Buddhism is practised by nearly 20 percent of our 33 million citizens. Vesak has been officially recognised as a public holiday since 1962, symbolising the country's enduring commitment to religious freedom, mutual respect, and national unity. This inclusive spirit is a cornerstone of our national identity and a reflection of our aspiration for peaceful coexistence.

5. Malaysia firmly believes that religious and cultural diversity is not a challenge to be managed, but a strength to be celebrated. In embracing our differences, whether in faith, culture, or tradition, we foster mutual understanding, reinforce social cohesion, and lay the foundation for sustainable development and enduring peace.

6. The observance of Vesak reminds us that the path to peace and enlightenment is enriched when we learn from one another. It is a time to reflect not only on the teachings of the Buddha but also on our shared humanity. In a world increasingly marked by polarisation and misunderstanding, the values of compassion and wisdom are more vital than ever.

7. On this Vesak Day, let us recommit ourselves to dialogue, understanding, and cooperation. May we walk together, in respect and solidarity, on our interconnected paths toward a more peaceful and harmonious world.
