Barquisimeto, 1 June 2024 - The Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Malaysia met with the Chamber of Commerce of Barquisimeto, representing over 200 businesses across various sectors. The meeting focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the growing halal market and other trade areas.
The Chargé d'Affaires began by sharing an insightful presentation about the international halal market, which is expected to grow to USD 5 trillion by 2030. He explained how countries like Brazil, India, and the United States—despite not being Muslim-majority nations—are leading exporters of halal products to Muslim countries. This inclusivity and diversity in the halal market, he noted, make it an exciting opportunity for Venezuela as well. With a sizable Muslim population and existing halal meat producers, Venezuela has a strong foundation to develop its own halal industry.
The meeting also highlighted Malaysia’s experience and success in the halal sector. The Chargé d'Affaires explained Malaysia’s globally recognised halal certification, which is managed by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). This certification is accepted in over 150 countries, supported by agreements with 88 certification bodies worldwide. He also shared how Malaysia has set up 14 halal parks across 10 states, which have attracted USD 4.4 billion in investments, hosting businesses ranging from multinational corporations to small enterprises.
The Chamber members expressed interest in learning more about halal tourism, asking whether Venezuela could develop this sector. The Chargé d'Affaires pointed out that countries like South Korea and Taiwan are already tapping into halal tourism, catering to Muslim travellers by offering halal food and services. He encouraged Venezuela to explore this potential, leveraging its existing halal food options and beautiful destinations to attract international tourists.
The discussion also expanded to other Malaysian exportable products, such as palm oil, electronics, auto parts, medical equipment, and consumer goods. The Chamber members were optimistic about strengthening trade ties and requested help connecting with Malaysian businesses. The Chargé d'Affaires assured them of the Embassy’s full support in facilitating these connections and exploring new trade and investment opportunities.
