AMBASSADOR OF MALAYSIA TO THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA
AT THE 54th NATIONAL DAY RECEPTION

Distinguished Guests from the Cuban Ministries and Agencies,
Members of the Media,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
At the outset, allow me to wish you “SELAMAT DATANG” which means a warm welcome to Your Excellencies and all distinguished guests. We are gathered here today to celebrate the 54th Anniversary of the National Day of Malaysia which fell on 31st August 2011. It is indeed a great honour for my wife and I as well as the Embassy of Malaysia to share this auspicious occasion with all of you. We are indeed delighted by your presence and I would like to personally express my sincere appreciation to all of youfor joining us here this evening to celebrate this joyous occasion. Your presence here this evening demonstrates the continued bonds of friendship that have been firmly established between Malaysia and her many friends.
This year’s National Day theme is “1 Malaysia: Successful Transformation, Prospering the People”. It is a reflection of the Malaysian Government’s Vision of “1 Malaysia: People First, Performance Now” and the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) which represent the prime focus of the Government. These are supported by the New Economic Model (NEM) and the 10th Malaysia Plan which form the foundation that will propel Malaysia towards becoming a high income, sustainable, inclusive and developed economy by 2020. In achieving this goal, it is important for the public sector, in working closely with the private sector and other stakeholders, to assume ownership and a leadership role in designing the implementation framework and timeline of Vision 2020.
Your Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Malaysia is blessed with a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural people. We not only accept these differences but we accept and embrace this diversity as truly Malaysia. For the past 54 years since our independence, Malaysia has enjoyed political stability and economic progress. Malaysians continue to live in peace and harmony which are the main ingredients for the growth and development of the country.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Cuba in 1975, both our countries have maintained excellent bilateral relations. This has been manifested in recent years by the high level visits, meetings and consultations held between the two countries, both at the bilateral and multilateral levels. We also continue to develop further our cooperation in areas such as oil and gas, biotechnology, healthcare, education and sports. As of 2010, a total of 68 Cuban officials have participated in various courses offered under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) which is aimed at capacity building and enhancing the knowledge and skills of Cuban officials. We are also appreciative of the assistance provided by the Cuban government to Malaysian students to study medicine at Cuban medical universities. These efforts, I believe, have provided excellent avenues for enhanced relations between the peoples of our two countries.
It is indeed the ardent desire of my Government to further strengthen the already good relations that exist with Cuba. I also wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to all the Cuban officials who have made this possible and I am confident that the bilateral relations between Malaysia and Cuba will continue to strengthen and flourish in the years ahead. José Martí once said “The world is strong and beautiful because of friends”. Cuba is truly a good friend of Malaysia and together we can build a better future.

Excelencias, Embajadores y Colegas del Cuerpo Diplomático,
Distinguidos invitados y funcionarios de los Ministerios y Agencias cubanas,
Miembros de los medios,
Señoras y Señores,
Para comenzar, permítanme desearles “SELAMAT DATANG” y una cálida bienvenida a Sus Excelencias y a todos los distinguidos invitados. Estamos reunidos aquí hoy para celebrar el 54 Aniversario del Día Nacional de Malasia que fue el 31 de agosto de 2011. Es realmente un gran honor para mi esposa y para mí así como para la Embajada de Malasia el compartir esta feliz ocasión con todos ustedes. Es realmente un placer para nosotros contar con su presencia y quisiera personalmente expresar mi sincero aprecio a todos ustedes por unírsenos aquí esta tarde para celebrar esta alegre ocasión. Su presencia aquí esta tarde demuestra los continuos lazos de amistad que han sido establecidos firmemente entre Malasia y sus muchos amigos.
El tema del Día Nacional de este año es “1 Malasia: Transformación exitosa, prosperidad para el pueblo”. Es un reflejo de la Visión del Gobierno de Malasia de: “1 Malasia: El Pueblo Primero, Rendimiento Ahora” y el Programa de Transformación del Gobierno (GTP por sus siglas en inglés) y el Programa de Transformación Económica (ETP por sus siglas en inglés) que representa el enfoque principal del Gobierno. Los mismos están sostenidos por el Nuevo Modelo Económico (NEM por sus siglas en inglés) y el 10mo Plan Malasia que conforman los cimientos que impulsarán a Malasia a convertirse en una economía desarrollada, inclusiva y sostenible de altos ingresos para el 2020. Para lograr esta meta, es importante para el sector público trabajar de cerca con el sector privado y otros accionistas para asumir la propiedad y un papel de liderazgo al diseñar una estructura de implementación y un cronograma para Visión 2020.

Señoras y Señores,
Malasia esta bendecida con una sociedad multi-étnica, multi-religiosa y multi-cultural. Nosotros no solo aceptamos esas diferencias sino que aceptamos esta diversidad como la verdadera Malasia. Durante los pasados 54 años desde nuestra independencia, Malasia ha disfrutado estabilidad política y progreso económico. Los malasios vivimos en paz y armonía, los principales ingredientes para el crecimiento y el desarrollo del país.
Desde el establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas entre Malasia y Cuba en 1975, ambos países han mantenido excelentes relaciones bilaterales. Las mismas se han manifestado en años recientes en visitas de alto nivel, encuentros y consultas sostenidas entre los dos países, ambas en niveles bilaterales y multilaterales. Además continuamos desarrollando nuestra cooperación en áreas tales como petróleo y gas, biotecnología, salud, educación y deportes. Hasta el 2010, un total de 68 funcionarios cubanos han participado en varios cursos ofrecidos bajo el Programa Malasio de Cooperación Técnica (MTCP por sus siglas en inglés) que apunta a la construcción de capacidades y a mejorar el conocimiento y las habilidades de los funcionarios cubanos. Estamos además agradecidos por la ayuda provista por el Gobierno cubano a estudiantes malasios que estudian medicina en universidades médicas cubanas. Estos esfuerzos, en mi opinión, han permitido el mejoramiento de las relaciones entre los pueblos de nuestros dos países.
Es realmente el ferviente deseo del Gobierno de Malasia el fortalecimiento de las buenas relaciones que existen con Cuba. También quisiera expresar nuestro sentido aprecio a todos los funcionarios cubanos que han hecho esto posible y estoy seguro que las relaciones bilaterales entre Malasia y Cuba continuarán fortaleciéndose y floreciendo en los años venideros. José Martí dijo una vez, “El mundo es fuerte y bello por los amigos”. Cuba es realmente una verdadera amiga de Malasia y juntos podemos construir un futuro mejor.
