Ambassador Jojie Samuel and Mr. Roslan Sharif, Counsellor, made a visit to the Scarabeo 9 oil rig on 27 June 2012. The visit was organized by the PETRONAS Office in Havana.
The invitees departed the Baracoa Military Airport, located at the west of Havana, at 8.30 am by helicopter and arrived at the oil rig at 9.45 am. A briefing and tour of the platform, as well as facilities of the oil rig took place later.
PETRONAS, with support from Russian Gazprom Neft, has been using the Scarabeo 9 since 24 May 2012 to drill a well in waters located about 160 km off the coast of the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. The oil rig, once the well in the blocks of PETRONAS has been drilled, it will be taken to a spot off the Cape of San Antonio, Cuba's westernmost point, for use by Venezuela’s PDVSA.
The visit ended at 3.30 pm the same day.
