AFTERMATH OF CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE
General Information
Earthquake with magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale hit Culverden, near Hamner Springs in South Island, New Zealand, on 2 minutes past midnight on 14 November 2016.
Worst-hit region is Kaikoura, just two hours’ drive north of Christchurch. Kaikoura is a tourist town famous for whale-watching.
Two fatalities confirmed thus far: one from a heart attack, and another due to a collapse of a historic Elms Homestead.
No National State of Emergency declared since the matter is ably handled by the Civil Defence emergency operations centre.
The public have been advised to stay away from New Zealand’s east coastline, beaches and waters.
Even though the tsunami alert warnings from the quake have been downgraded, New Zealand remains vigilant because of the supermoon effect.
In Wellington, the public have been further advised to stay indoors because of the forecasted high winds (above 140km/h).
The New Zealand MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Wellington, Marlborough and the Wairarapa regions, where there is a distinct possibility of strong winds developing.

The embassy has directly contacted the Students’ Associations in affected areas. All Malaysian students are reported safe, some are home in Malaysia.
Malaysian citizens in Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland have also been contacted, and all are reported safe.
The embassy will continue to monitor the situation.
Malaysians travelling to New Zealand should get an update of the weather condition and safety requirements.

EARTHQUAKE IN CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington, is currently monitoring the situation of affected areas following the 7.5 Richter scale earthquake that struck Christchurch on Monday, 14 November 2016 at 12.02 am local time (Sunday, 13 November 2016, 7.02 pm Malaysia time).
As of now, no Malaysians are reported to be affected by the earthquake. Malaysians in the affected areas and those who require consular assistance are advised to contact the High Commission of Malaysia in Wellington at:
