EARTHQUAKE IN CHAUK, CENTRAL MYANMAR 24 AUGUST 2016
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that so far no Malaysians are involved in the earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale that struck Chauk, central Myanmar on Wednesday, 24 August 2016 at 5.04 pm local time. Chauk is located in Magway District, approximately 198 km from Mandalay and 650 km from Yangon.
The ancient city of Bagan was also reported damaged. According to official reports, 94 Buddha temples and archeological structures were damaged by the earthquake. Buildings were also reported damaged in the cities of Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw.
The Embassy of Malaysia in Yangon will continue to monitor the situation and provide periodic updates.
