SPECIAL  ASEAN-U.S. FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING WASHINGTON D.C., USA 4 MAY 2017


The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman will lead the Malaysian delegation to the Special ASEAN-U.S. Foreign Ministers Meeting which will be held in Washington D.C., USA on 4 May 2017. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers will be meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. The Special Meeting will involve the participation of Foreign Ministers from the 10 ASEAN Member States and the Secretary-General of ASEAN. YB Minister of Foreign Affairs will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Special Meeting will be preceded by the 30th ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue at the level of Senior Officials on 3 May 2017. Apart from the Special Meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers would also be meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Defence, the National Security Advisor and attend a High-Level Roundtable Forum organised by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

This year marks an important milestone in ASEAN-U.S. relations as both ASEAN and the US will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations. The Special Meeting will provide the opportunity for the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN and the U.S. Secretary of State to reflect on their long standing relations under the strategic partnership. The Meeting will also provide the opportunity to review their relations as well as exchange views and discuss the U.S. foreign policy towards ASEAN and the region. They will also exchange views on regional and international issues of common concern.

This is an important meeting as this is the first time the ASEAN Foreign Ministers will be meeting the newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State after his assumption of office on 1 February 2017.
