UNITED NATIONS DAY TUESDAY, 24 OCTOBER 2017
Malaysia together with 192 nations celebrate United Nations (UN) Day, today 24 October 2017. The UN Day marks the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.
Malaysia joined the UN in September 1957 and has been an active member in promoting the three pillars of the UN; peace and security, human rights and development. In addition to fulfilling international commitments and responsibilities under the UN framework, Malaysia had also played its role effectively and efficiently as an elected member of the UN Security Council on four occasions: 1965, 1989-1990, 1999-2000 and 2015-2016.
Malaysia remains committed in supporting and implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The three components of the SDGs namely economic growth, social needs and environmental protection resonate well with the Eleventh Malaysia Plan.
In July this year, Malaysia presented its Voluntary National Review (VNR) at the High-Level Political Forum on SDGs in New York. The VNR, which reports the actions and measures taken by Malaysia to advance the implementation of the SDGs, is testimony to Malaysia’s continued commitment to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
In terms of peace and security, Malaysia supports the central role of the UN in maintaining international peace and security. In September this year, Malaysia signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in New York. This reflects Malaysia’s commitment and support for the longstanding principle of general and complete disarmament, in particular nuclear disarmament and measures towards achieving a nuclear weapons-free world. Malaysia has also participated actively in the UN peacekeeping missions since 1960. To date, Malaysia has participated in 36 UN peacekeeping missions with the deployment of 35,000 of Malaysian military and police personnel.
Malaysia will also continue to champion the promotion of moderation in bridging differences and resolving disputes as well as to counter violent extremism and radicalisation, at the UN. Malaysia is working towards bringing forth a Resolution on Moderation at the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly.
