WORKING VISIT OF THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS TO WASHINGTON, D.C., USA, 21-22 MARCH 2017
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman will undertake a working visit to Washington, D.C. to attend the Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Global Coalition against Da’esh on 22 March 2017. He will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting, which will be hosted by US Secretary of State, Mr Rex Tillerson seeks to intensify the campaign to defeat Da’esh with the collaboration of the 68 Partners of the Global Coalition. The meeting will also discuss issues such as addressing the urgent humanitarian needs, and de-mining and stabilisation assistance required in the newly liberated areas in Iraq and Syria that were previously under the control of Da’esh. The Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Global Coalition against Da’esh is expected to identify the ideal mechanism to counter Da’esh’s constant attacks that had caused the loss of innocent lives around the world, and also give attention to finding ways to encumber the spread of their extremist ideology through false narratives.
During the meeting, Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman is expected to speak on the current threats posed by Da’esh from the national and regional perspectives, as well as the challenges and counter-measures. He will also share Malaysia’s experience and ideas on countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism.
Aside from attending the ministerial meeting, Dato’ Sri Anifah will also take the opportunity to meet, for the first time his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to discuss issues of common interest, as well as regional and global developments. The meeting is significant considering that it is YB Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman’s first working visit to the United States under the new administration of President Donald J. Trump.
The participation of Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman at the Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Global Coalition reaffirms Malaysia’s support and commitment towards the Global Coalition in its campaign to defeat Da’esh. Malaysia believes that international collaboration, such as through this multilateral initiative, is critical and has become one of the important components in Malaysia’s counter-terrorism strategy.
